Australia was represented across the world this weekend with two key sporting events seeing Australian’s struggle to stay on top.
Canadian GP – A Win for Mercedes
On the other end of the globe, Aussie driver Oscar Piastri took part in the F1 Canadian GP. In a year that so far has seen the Australian dominate the roads, this weekend sadly saw him fall short of a podium finish. Mercedes driver George Russell took the win in Canada just inching out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, and Russell’s team mate at Mercedes Kimi Antonelli. Sadly, Piastri fell just short and finished in 4th place, with team mate Lando Norris getting a DNF. The result came after team mates Norris and Piastri collided with each other causing the safety car to be deployed.
World Test Championship – Defeat at Lord’s
The cricketing world’s eyes were fixed on Lord’s in England last week/over the weekend as the World Test Championship played off between Australia and South Africa. Whilst South Africa finished on top of the table when the scoring games finished up, it was still Australia who were picked as favourites to win the WTC. But after three straight innings of low scores from the batsman and the bowling showing its dominance in the game, South Africa dug deep with a strong final innings with the bat that saw them win the World Test Championship. Whilst Australia’s bowling side showing their a-game, with skipper Pat Cummins having an incredible game, it was South Africa’s Aiden Markram who was easily the player of the match who outclassed the Australian bowlers with an elite batting innings. It was a cinderella story for the ages to see South Africa find their way on top. Since the loss Captain Pat Cummins has shared his disappointment with the result and that the Aussies are expecting a “hard reset” ahead of the upcoming Ashes Series at home later this year.
