Tasmanian candlelight vigils for family violence victims

Candlelight vigils will be held at Hobart’s Parliament Lawns, the Gnomon Pavilion in Ulverstone, and Launceston’s Civic Square this evening as part of national action to support those impacted by family and domestic violence.

Each year on the first Wednesday of May, candelight vigils are held across the country marking the beginning of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, bringing together victim-survivors, family violence, workers and community members in a moment of reflection while shining a light on the impact family violence has on individuals, families and the wider community.

Engender Equality CEO Alina Thomas says the impact of violence and abuse is felt right across Tasmania.

“We also commemorate lives that have been lost due to family violence,” she said.

“It’s important as well to express appreciation for front line workers who are holding the stories and supporting the safety of literally thousands of victim-survivors in Tasmania.”

Tasmanians are being encouraged to attend a vigil near to them, to remember and honour those who have lost their lives – an average of more than one woman killed by an intimate partner per week across the country last year.

“Over recent years we have seen the vigil growing in size as our awareness and intolerance of violence against women increases,” Ms. Thomas said.

“So it’s really important if people through any of these processes, as their awareness of family violence is increasing, or perhaps their concern about their own safety is increasing it’s really important that they reach out for help.”
