Free gigs at the Alley in Devonport are the latest victim of rising costs and payroll red tape.
The Ally entertainment centre announcing the indefinite cancellation of it’s weekly Saturday live music program, ending around 50 paid performances each year for local musicians.
Alley Director Mark Vernon saying the decision comes as the industry which already runs on tight margins cops growing compliance obligations including new rules around Superannuation requirements for entertainers.
The additional pressures tipping the scale too far for the venue which doesn’t charge guests to enjoy the music.
Mr. Vernon is now urging other hospitality businesses, venues and entertainers to speak up about the struggles they’re facing, with the hope the government will recognise the burdens impacting the industry.
