It’s been confirmed a leopard seal spotted on the Picnic Point Beach at West Ulverstone yesterday was not sick, as first believed.
The animal was checked out my volunteers from the Tasmanian Wildlife Hospital at Wilmot, who advised the juvenile male was merely resting.

Parks and Wildlife Tasmania says it’s common behaviour for the species for this time of year, with juvenile males adventuring away from Antarctica.
Leopard seals breed on the Antarctic pack ice and are rarely seen in Tasmania with around five sightings a year on average.
The seal is being monitored by parks and wildlife staff and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.
UPDATE: The seal has returned to the sea.
