Mr Ford said that pet owners had an important part to play in Tasmania’s bird flu response,

“Some domestic animals, including dogs and cats, can be affected with bird flu through close contact with sick or dead wildlife, body fluids, or contaminated environments.

“Dog owners are strongly encouraged to observe local government ‘on and off’ lead laws or no dog zones, to protect birds from unnecessary stress.

“When walking your dog, keep it on a lead and prevent it from investigating, touching or scavenging dead birds, sick wildlife or animal carcasses to prevent it from potential exposure to bird flu.”

At this point, there is no evidence of mass mortalities and there has been no detections in Tasmanian poultry and chicken and eggs remain safe to eat.
