The Central Coast Council is being forced to reconsider the future of the childcare services it provides in the midst of unprecedented demand.

A report commissioned by the council has shown to meet the expected future demand, the council would need to almost double the number of staff it employs in the sector and the number of placements available.

The report looked at services provided by the council, including long daycare, outside school hours care and vacation care.

It showed over the next 8-10 years, the council would need to increase staff from 40 to 70 and provide 440 placements, compared to the current number of 250.

The report says the council may have to consider a an alternative ownership model, including out-sourcing services, or considerably increasing it’s own investment in services, which would require a multi-million dollar commitment.

Central Coast Mayor Cheryl Fuller says the council is expected to make a decision in September after consultation with stakeholders, including the community.
