Government backs down on Penguin support school plan

July 3, 2023 9:35 am in by

The State Government has abandoned plans to consolidate North West Support School services at Penguin.

The Government promised before the last election it would relocate the Devonport campus to a new site and upgrade the Burnie campus, but earlier this year floated the Penguin plan, to be located at the former Penguin Primary School site.

However, the idea met with opposition from parents and supporters, saying the central campus at Penguin would disadvantage, with a petition on change.org attracting more than 1000 signatures tabled in parliament by Braddon Labor MP Shane Broad.

Education Minister Roger Jaensch says the Government hadn’t abandoned its pre-election promise, but needed to evaluate the Penguin option when it became available after the election.

Mr Jaensch says the Government had consulted with parents and the community, and based on feedback, the decision has been made to not pursue the Penguin option.

Pre-elections promises for Devonport and Burnie included around $15 million for a new Devonport campus and hydrotherapy pool as well as $3 million to upgrade the Burnie campus.
