There’s praise for the Transport Commissioner’s move to drop the speed limit on a stretch of the South Arm Road east of Hobart.
80-kilometre-an-hour signs will be installed by the end of September between Sandford and just south of the Clifton Beach intersection.
It will affect a sweeping curved section of South Arm Road which was the scene of a triple fatality last month.
Andrew Everett and Maddie Baird, of Howrah, and Rokeby man Brady Poole died after their vehicle lost control.
Australian Road Safety Foundation Chief Executive Russel White says deaths on rural roads make up a disproportionate amount of the country’s overall toll.
“When we look at our road toll figures, more than two-thirds of fatal crashes occur in regional and remote areas,” he said.
“It’s an important time to be extra vigilant whenever you’re on a regional country or rural road.”
Tasmania’s road toll has soared to 43 so far in 2022, well above the 26 recorded at this time last year.
