The Central Coast Council has backed down on plans to replace the distinctive penguin-shaped rubbish bins on Main Road at Penguin.
A review of bins in the Central Coast area last year identified they need to be uniform throughout the municipality for ease of emptying and repairs, recommending the Penguin bins be replaced.
The proposal drew considerable negative community feedback, with the Central Coast Council advising the much-loved features of the Penguin foreshore will remain, with new penguin-shaped bins currently being manufactured for installation by the end of June.
Central Coast Mayor Cheryl Fuller says the council has listened to community feedback and is committed to ensuring the new bins uphold the small-town, coastal charm and heritage Penguin is famous for.
Councillor Fuller says while the bin review was aimed at improving capacity and functionality of waste management in the municipality, it’s also vital the council considers each community’s wishes when making design decisions.
