Saputo agrees to discuss pay claim

An end appears in sight for striking maintenance workers at the Saputo Dairy facility in Burnie.

Workers have walked off the job four times in the past week after enterprise bargaining talks broke down, with the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union claiming workers in Burnie were being paid up to 21 per cent that workers at Saputo facilities in Victoria performing similar duties.

Striking workers returned to work at 9am on Tuesday after walking off the job at midnight on Sunday, but due to a lack of response from the company, walked out again two hours later before returning at 6pm on Tuesday night.

Deputy Opposition Leader and Braddon MP Anita Dow visited the site on Tuesday, supporting the protected industrial action by the maintenance crew, saying local jobs should be paid correctly.

AMWU Tasmanian state organiser Mike Wickham says Saputo has now agreed to a possible solution and will meet with workers and the union on Friday..
