Justice campaigners are celebrating a big win, after Tasmania’s Attorney General overruled the Supreme Court’s decision against ordering an investigation into the 2020 death of Jari Wise in the Huon Valley.
Elise Archer has directed an inquest be held into the death of the 26 year old, who was on foot when hit by a car driven by his intermittent girlfriend, Melissa Oates, outside Huonville High.
“I have personally monitored the Court’s proceedings and have given careful consideration to this matter while awaiting the Court’s decision,” said Ms Archer.
“In light of that consideration, and following today’s Supreme Court decision, I have determined to exercise my powers under s 24(1)(g) of the Coroners Act to direct the Coroner to hold an inquest into the death of Mr Wise.
“I have not made this decision lightly, but it is my sincere belief that this will assist Mr Wise’s loved ones to find the answers that they seek.”
Oates served 8 months for driving offences, but was never charged for the death itself.
Jari’s mother Faith Tkalac, who has waged a lengthy campaign for an inquest, has hailed Ms Archer’s intervention.
“It’s been a long, hard fight, I don’t know, I’m a little bit sick in the stomach,” she said.
“I’m just so relieved that finally the truth is going to be told.”
