Derby disappearance ends in tragedy
A report will be prepared for the coroner after a Sunday night tragedy at the northeast town of Derby.
A local man vanished in the Ringarooma River; emergency services were summoned around 8 pm after he was swept away.
Police and SES volunteers combed the area with the assistance of the Westpac helicopter.
“Tasmania Police search and rescue teams as well as SES volunteers arrived at the scene to conduct searches along the banks of the river,” said Sergeant Scott McKinnell.
“The temperature in Derby was around zero at the time the man went missing, with heavy fog, which made conditions very tough.
“Those conditions caused us to have grave concerns for the man and searching continued into the night.”
Volunteers found the 67-year-old's body at about 1.30 am, 400 metres downstream.
