Following horror revelations of paedophile teachers at recent commission of inquiry hearings in Hobart, the Tasmanian Government is set to fund dedicated student safety officers in schools.

Every government school will employ a safeguarding officer in a $26.1 million pre-budget announcement.

"Safeguarding Officers were recommended as a key strategy for proactively keeping children and young people safe following the Independent Inquiry into the Tasmanian Department of Education’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse," said Education Minister Roger Jaensch

"The Safeguarding Officers, who will be employed as part of a Support and Wellbeing Team, will plan and implement risk-management strategies for every Government school to protect students from sexual abuse."

The iniative will also attract nearly $10 million in funding beyond the forward estimates to ensure the officers can remain in schools.
