Active cases explode

coronavirus update

There's an apparent discrepancy in Tasmania's latest COVID numbers.

Tasmania's active case count has inexplicably surged by 1254 to more than 7400 since Wednesday, the rise almost equal to new infections in the last 24 hours, which at 1268 are the highest since the Dark Mofo festival and its mass gatherings wrapped up.

The Emergency Declaration and associated mask rules are still on track to expire on Thursday night.

There have also been another two deaths, a woman aged in 100s from the state's south and a man in his 70s from the North West, taking the overall toll to 92.

14 hospital patients are being treated specifically for coronavirus, three of them in intensive care.
