Spud farmers offered price increase
The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association has recommended Coastal potato growers reluctantly accept an offer from processor Simplot to increase their price by $105 a tonne.
Farmers have been hit by rises in fuel and fertiiliser costs, with the peak planting season in October and November looming, with some planting to start as early as next month.
TFGA Simplot potato committee chair Leigh Elphinstone says the offer includes provision for future fertiliser cost increases.
Simplot processes potatoes at its Ulverstone factory, while rival brand McCain has a plant at Smithton.
McCain has yet to make an offer to its growers for the upcoming season.
